Meggie's Book Review

Meggie’s Book Review

Over the last few weeks, I had the joy of reading The Giver, by Lois Lowry. This book takes place in a dystopian future where conflict, poverty, divorce and unemployment does not exist. The book focuses on the character Jonas. Jonas is the oldest child in his family. He has one little sister named Lily. Jonas is confused about which job he will receive. In Jonas’s world, some job options are Receiver of Memory, Engineer, Caretaker of the Old, Birth Mother or Speaker. The Giver shows Jonas’s life and how he overcomes obstacles that he will face in his near future.

Lois Lowry was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 20, 1937. She began her writing career after she received her degree from University of Southern Maine. She offers a variety of books ranging in topics from dystopian worlds to the Holocaust to death. Some of her book titles include: Number the Stars, A Summer to Die and On The Horizon. The book has three sequels; Gathering Blue, Messenger and Son. The Giver is her most famous book that was published in 1993. The book won The John Newbery Award. The John Newbery Award is awarded to the author of “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.”

If you are a lover for books, especially Science-Fiction, I highly recommend The Giver. It is one of my favorite books and I learned a lot from reading it. I hope you consider reading this book as well!
